Raymond (Hugh Laurie) is a bank clerk with a secret passion for samba. When he discovers his wife having an affair with his slimy boss, Raymond snaps and steals a hefty sum of cash from the bank, using it to fund a quick trip to Rio de Janeiro where he hopes to find Samba Monthly covergirl Orlinda (Brazilian model Vanessa Nunes). Upon his arrival, he falls in with scheming cab driver Paulo, who while agreeing to assist Raymond in his hunt, also has his eyes on the small fortune Raymond carries with him. While Raymond may be after one person in all of Rio, soon almost everyone in Rio is after him--or rather, what he carries with him.

Writer/director Christopher Monger attempts to re-create that unique Ealing atmosphere with this tale of two cities, with the help of José Luis Alcaine's astute cinematography. Monger's most successful attempt at comedy so far was 1995's The Englishman Who Went up a Hill, but Came down a Mountain, but this genial yet uninspired tale is a very poor relation.

If the 'Hugh' in question was Grant instead of Laurie then this film would have been billed as 'The Romantic Comedy Of The Year.'
This is a well put together film with a strong central performance. The script is a bit predictable but you really don't mind going along for the ride.
If you liked Bridget Jones and Nurse Betty then this is for you.
A good, lighthearted, British comedy. Hugh Laurie plays his part well. There aren't that many belly laughs but the great scenery and good story make up for it. A good movie to put on if you're knackered after work or for a sunday night in.
