Marvellous adaptationBy Nigel Burris from Basildon, Essex , 20 Jun 2004
[Highly rated reviewer]Literary adaptations are notoriously fraught with danger, especially if it's one as popular as Tracy Chevalier's Girl With a Pearl Earring. Full marks then to the filmmakers' for having made an engaging, engrossing, moving movie which not only does the source material proud, but in places improves on it.
It's the visuals which amaze here. From the bustling, not-far-from-squalor atmosphere of 17th Century Delft, to the rich adornments of Vermeer's callow wife, to the austere yet strangely warm studio Vermeer uses, Girl With a Pearl Earring looks stunning. For a film about art, and the appreciation of art, there are scenes of painterly composition which are a joy to watch.
That the film is slow and methodical reflects the artist Vermeer's own work practices. As played by Firth, he appears as frustrated with the conventions of the day as his mother-in-law is ruled by them. Johansson it is who shines, though, stealing every scene she's in, and doing so with a minimum of effort. She would have made a formidable silent actress, so effective is her ability to project her inner thoughts and feelings.
Well worth your time, and like the famous painting it depicts, a movie which will linger long after you've seen it.

Lacks plot contentBy a customer , 08 Jan 2013Watched this as people in my art class have been doing interpretations of Vermeer paintings. Not much story at all, a bit dull - the plot can be summed up in a few sentences. Knowing the paintings, the film does incorporate the still lifes very accurately in the sets. If I had no previous interest in the artist then this would have been incredibly dry film and I would not have picked it.
Girl with a Pearl Earring - ReviewBy filmwatcher1 (4 reviews) , 09 Mar 2012I'd wanted to watch this film for a long time, it wasn't on at the cinema for very long and it was difficult to get a rental but thanks for Love Film I managed to see it.
It lived up to expectation, beautifully shot, sumptuous shots, amazing use of colours and contrasts, you could almost watch it without dialogue or a plot - it is very beautiful to watch.
Also lives up to the book, not exactly accurate, but still good enough.
Loved it from beginning to end.
Girl With A Pearl EarringBy a customer , 18 Dec 2011A good plot and well acted. It kept my interest. The sets and historical background were really good which made the story being created plausible.
One to watchBy a customer , 10 Nov 2011I loved this film. It gives a very good historic representation of life at the time. Good acting from all the main characters.
Surprise of the yearBy pg900 (11 reviews) from Ware , 25 Oct 2011I really rated this one. I was very impressed with how much Colin Firth could convey by an array of smouldering looks. Great atmosphere, good historical detail.
