An enjoyable Elvis Presley romp with colourful locations, a serviceable (though silly) plot and some super ladies, including Stella Stevens who also gets to sing. The sentimentality is a bit glutinous, but there's an underlying toughness to Presley's character that is shown to good effect in some particularly well-acted scenes that also involve young Laurel Goodwin. The hit song is the superb Return to Sender, which was an international number one, and the rest of the score is quite bearable, including We're Coming in Loaded and Thanks to the Rolling Sea. Yes, it's about boats, as if that mattered.

    Not his Best

So i'm not the biggest Elvis fan in the world but I do appreciate his work and have always been interested in his films. So I thought i'd randomly select an Elvis film to peruse. Possibly not the best choice of his films to start out with is what i'm now thinking.

It wasn't awful but it wasn't fab either - possibly only for the die hard Elvis fans. It was amusing but more in a bizarre 'what on earth did he/she/they do that for??' kinda way as opposed to a planned comedic scene.

Things happened but i'd say that if Elvis wasn't attached to this project then it would have faded away in to oblivion many moons ago. Word i'd use to sum it all up - ODD.

    Dumb! Dumb! Dumb!

Jaw-dropping fact No. 1 - this lightweight piece of fluff was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Film. Jaw-dropping fact No. 2 - it was written by respected writer Edward Anhalt who won an Oscar for 'Becket' two years later. Mind you, 'lightweight piece of fluff' doesn't begin to describe how vacuous this Hawaiian-set Presley production line number is. At least it features 'Return to Sender'.
