    [Highly rated reviewer]

This was a bit disappointing - it was not cinematic enough, but was really a good two-part TV drama on the big screen. Afterwards, as I began to think about the plot and the characters' actions, it began to seem more and more sloppy and far fetched, so despite an excellent performance by the main cast, and some good drama and some thrills... it does not satisfy.

This certainly wasn't a thriller, and the politics were almost absent. It was, firmly and clearly, a Poliakoff piece: big houses, English toffs, family secrets, revelations... children and old people, old photos... yep, more of the same. Has the great P run totally out of inspiration for something new, and doesn't he have the ability to do anything with the good ideas he does have any more?

I'm not sure why this film is so low rated. It's not the greatest, but was very gripping. The cast was very good, storyline interesting. I was just slightly disappointed by the ending, it left me with too many questions - not in a cliffhanger way - just an unfinished story. I'd recommend it anyway.

Early WW 2 film about Nazi appeasement. Pretentious and contrived film that lacks credibility. Plot is just not believable. Wooden acting.

If you like Poliakoff you will like this but probably not his best. Worth a watch though if you like his stuff

The unsatisfactory plot lacked credibility and made it a disappointing watch. If it is a story of real pre-war politics then it could/should be better told.

  • A wooden disappointment

This is a most disappointing film - given the director, the story and the quality of the cast. Bill Nighy in particular speaks so woodenly that it's as if he's spoofing himself. And 'wooden' sums it all up, really. From the very first scenes and pieces of dialogue it's obvious that this film is going to be tough going - and it is. Such a shame, as the main plot idea is a good one and with the personnel involved both behind and in front of the camera it could have been so very much better.
