It will acquaint audiences with a remarkable episode that had ramifications far beyond the basketball court....The film does a good job of showcasing just how momentous that game was...
Glory Road at first seems to be in the mould of 'Coach Carter' but with one very noticeable difference. The central theme of the movie is racism and the film is about making a nonsense out of racial stereotyping. The film includes some disturbing scenes which will put many people off seeing this film.
On the plus side, there are some uplifting yet intense scenes featuring the excellent Josh Lucas as the head coach of the team who instills a sense of solidarity and hard work into his players and it is satisfying to watch them grow together.
The film is set during the 1960s and the retro feel provided by the background music and clothes gives the movie some added charm.
It is well worth a look if you can tolerate some of the more unsavory aspects of the film's content.
This is a very good film (based on a real story) - solid 3,5 stars. It is one of those films, when after watching it, you want to find out more about the real characters and hope there is enough extras to satisfy your curiosity. This movie tackles a serious issue of racism and prejudice against black players in the 60s. At the time they were not allowed to play Basketball competitively at colleges/universities and on national level. Very brave young coach takes the risk and recruits some talented black players offering a scholarship at Texas Western. It is portrayed very truthfully and realistically, it makes for a very compelling viewing. With everything so perfectly authentic youll enjoy it from the beginning to the end, without being a basketball enthusiast. Josh Lucas is gorgeous as the head coach, the cast, characters and acting is great. The only minor drawback for me was the length 2hrs (-7min), so not very good to watch on the week night, never the less the basketball games were so gripping that I didnt mind staying up little bit longer than usual to watch the extras.
