Glory is a celebration of a little-known act of mass courage during the Civil War. Simply put, the heroes involved have been ignored by history due to racism. Those heroes were the all-black members of the 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, headed by Col. Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), the son of an influential abolitionist (played by an uncredited Jane Alexander). Despite the fact that the Civil War is ostensibly being fought on their behalf, the black soldiers are denied virtually every privilege and amenity that is matter of course for their white counterparts; as in armies past and future, they are given the most menial and demeaning of tasks. Still, none of the soldiers quit the regiment when given the chance. The unofficial leaders of the group are gravedigger John Rawlins (Morgan Freeman) and fugitive slave Trip (Denzel Washington), respectively representing the brains and heart of the organization. The 54th acquit themselves valiantly at Fort Wagner, SC, charging a fortification manned by some 1,000 Confederates. Glory was based on Lincoln Kirstein's Lay This Laurel and Peter Burchard's One Gallant Rush; the latter book was founded on the letters of Col. Robert Gould Shaw, the real-life character played by Matthew Broderick. The film won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for co-star Denzel Washington, and additional statuettes for Best Cinematography (Freddie Francis) and Sound Recording.~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

A film that follows the story about the the first ever black regiment in the US Army as it battles in the American Civil War.

If you have any interest in American history then you have to see this film. At times the film verges on cheesiness but there's too much substance to the film to really allow that to happen and I can wholeheartedly recomment this for anyone with an interest in war films that have more than just big explosions.

WHEN WILL IT BE RECOGNISED SUB_TITLES ARE ESSENTIAL ?

After reading the reviews I was looking forward so much to seeing this movie. Sadly, once again sub-titles are not included and after only five minutes I was forced to abandon watching. Hearing difficulties forced the volume to be turned up, thus destroying completely my objective ! This must apply to many others and yet the producers completely ignore the needs of the hard of hearing

Dissapointing made for TV type docudrama

A politically correct history lesson, with a heavy, sugary soundtrack. The worst kind of cheesy Hollywood propaganda.

Morgan Freeman is far too good for this.

Glory Be

I'm a sucker for the American Civil War but this one is above average, and average is always pretty good.

The acting and action leaves nothing to be desired. It's spell binding from beginning to end.

The only complaint that I would make is that it is not long enough. But then, if it were three times as long I would still feel the same.

Brilliant. Well worth a watch.

Seen this film before but i had to see it again.We were talking about films at work one day and i mentioned this .A couple of workmates rented it and said it was very good.This made me add it to my list.For me it is very good and as others have said ,give it a try.You won't be disappointed.
