Loved it! Sizzling expose of the tired old Spanish machismo. Javier Bardem excellent as always and, although it's a bit dated now, it's still a must see if you're at all interested in Spanish and World Cinema.

It's really too bad. Bardem is a wonderful actor, and I'm really glad he has done so many better films since making this one.

Golden Balls is a basic story of an arrogant, self absorbed and thoughtless a**hole who gets his comeuppance. No surprises, no twists, nothing interesting to say about passion, greed, power, sex, money, men, women. Nada, nada, y nada mas. The one star I give it is for the brief moment when Marta and Claudia find something together, although that moment is completely out of character for the rest of the film and reeks of filmmaker trying to appease the 'male gaze' of his audience. Ah well. NEXT. Jamon Jamon. I hope it's better.

  • ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD

Unconvincing rags-to-riches drama with fine actors and performances. Intended as a satire on parvenu nouveau riche, machismo, Spanish bad taste in general (especially Julio Iglesias) and the cynicism of those with ambitions but no talents with which to achieve those ambitions. The technical quality of the DVD transfer is not first-rate, but does not lower itself to VHS standards.

The virility on show here masks an inner emptiness that regular sex with various girls can never mask, until he meets a woman who mirrors and reminds him of his own rapacious sexuality. Macho men repress their intellect and replace it with boundless energy tempered by having nothing to do with it except endlessly prove how manly they are. Here, everything is paired: Two women had at the same time; two Rolexes; two eggs; two testicles. there is too much unresolved hate from the creator of this film here for the film to much more than a list of loathed items, rather than a dramatic exploration of either why they are hated or why they are hateful - or both. This film is as superficial as its characters despite its also possessing boundless energy. Citizen Kane it most definitely is not
