One of the most popular television shows of the 1980s, THE GOLDEN GIRLS centered on four elderly single women living in the same house together, all played by sitcom veterans: sensible Dorothy (Bea Arthur), sweet but stupid Rose (Betty White), lusty Blanche (Rue McClanahan), and Dorothy's outspoken mother, Sophia (Estelle Getty). The programme was nominated for many Emmy and Golden Globe awards, and was consistently in Nielsen's top 10 for its entire run, garnering both critical acclaim and public popularity. It also proved daring for its time: not only did it tackle sensitive political issues, but it was a prime-time show whose main characters were much older than television's desired demographic. Series four collects all 26 episodes from the programme's fourth year, and features guest stars such as Quentin Tarantino, Julio Iglesias, and Bob Hope.

We have been working our way through the entire series, and the girls just never fail to entertain. On occasion my wife and I decide to take a break from renting feature films and turn to some of our favourite TV series from the past. The Golden Girls are tops as far as we are concerned: loopy ,zany, crotchety, eccentric - yes they are all of these and more. Glad we have these memories on DVD to remind us of these grand dames of comedy.
