    All about the comorra?

This is *technically* a very good film. However it completely failed to deliver in educating the viewer about the comorra which is kind of the point. There are five or so independent story lines that remained as such. I felt there was a lack of overall story although maybe that won't bother all viewers.

Having read about the comorra since I now realise why the different storylines were relevant but surely the film should have conveyed this, an opportunity missed. There is a definite brilliance in the film making there but it wasn't for me. for example - the film was made with residents of the estate it was set in rather than actors and didn't suffer at all for that.

    Disappointing

I love mafia films and books and was dying to see this. I was looking forward to seeing a portrayal of the modern mafia at grass roots, rather than the Hollywood slant of suits, women and wise guys. About halfway through, you realise that it is five tales about different people. However, these stories went nowhere and all the guys seemed to look the same. I couldn't tell the characters apart, whose side they were on (or what the 'sides' were) or why they were fighting. By the end of the film, I still couldn't tell you anyone's name. It opens with a shooting in a solarium and you think this is going to introduce a war of some kind. But it goes nowhere. They get shot. End of. The film was cinematically terrific. Bleak, dark and hopeless, which was great - I didn't want a hero or a happy ending. What I did want was some discernable plot line rather than a jumble of nothing.

    Interesting

As gangster films go, this is a very interesting effort. It is a real griity affair and in no way does it glamourise the gangster culture in Italy. The film epics a number of characters of various ages and sex and the dertimental effect on their lifestyles.

A word of caution, the film is hard to follow at times and it does not focus on any lead characters and I found it difficult to understand all that was happening. The film had the basis of an exceptional film and without having to move towards the hollywood blockbuster feel I felt with a slightly different style it could have been more viewer friendly.

    Awful

I really wanted this to be a gem in same way city of god was. The trailer for it makes it out to be a masterpiece. In reality its dull, poorly acted poorly written, poorly shot piece of crap...You feel nothing for any of the characters good or bad..........Awful

    Gommorrah

I did not like this film, very slow and very dated, I could not see what was so good about innocent helpless people being killed along with the guilty why advertize this barbaric way of life?.This movie although true not only opens your eyes to the reality for some, but is very negative for some poor vunerable being in the poverty trap and if so why don't the higher authorities do their jobs and look after and keep order like they are supposed to.

    brilliantly despairing

very stark, very bleak, very dark, but the truth about the degradation of the camorra and its destructive persistence in naples.

in the extreme poverty and lack of hope, the children are recruited into the crime gangs and forced to pick sides, leading to death and betrayal.

the acting is superb and convincing in this beginningless and endless tale of corruption. drugs on a low level and the cynical contracts to dispose of toxic waste in illegal landfills on a 'higher' level, all combine in a kind of inferno.

only one small ray of hope when one boy - roberto - decides to get out of the 'life.'

a powerful indictment of a society abandoned by government and ruled by fear, this film is hard to watch at times, but i found it riveting and one of the most powerful movies i have seen for years, and a welcome antidote to all those robert de niro glossies about the american mafia.

    this is what really happens.

    Gomorrah

The film is an adaptation of Roberto Saviano's book, which is structured with each chapter telling a different, true & unconnected story, so I was interested to see how this would be made into a film. I was very pleased with the resullt, but if you're looking for a story tidied up with a petty bow at the end, you'll be disappointed. The seperate story lines are intertwined & take a little concentration. Also, if you like films about organised crime, Gomorrah goes against the grain, as there's much more to it than violence & it does not glamourise the gangsters life. On the contrary, it is positively grim.

It shoudn't be forgotten that it is a very brave story that is being told. Roberto Saviano is now living in hideing & may well need protection for the rest of his life. This is not a recent phenomena, as the Cammora have been about for generations & as many of their businesses legitimise, the more powerfull they become. Up until now, nobody has been brave enough to tell this story. Somebody has now & to criticize it because it's not like the run of the mill mafia film, seams a little fickle to me.

    Stupendous Entertainment

Oh boy, here is a film that is hugely entertaining from the first moment to the somewhat sad ending. The fascinating stories of the 5 characters is extraordinary. The interweaving activiries of these different characters and the moody musical choices throughout are brilliant.

Similar but better than City of God. It captures in a most marvelously documentary way the essence of the 'everyday' mafia at work. Lots of different vignettes to enjoy from the boys who try and take on the mafia leaders to the waste contractor in the humungous quarry scene and the lonely, put upon haute couture tailer who sells out to the underground Chinese factory. So much detail its breathtaking. Using unknown actors is a complete success - it really feels like you are living in Naples and experiencing the thing first hand. It grips you. The scene in the underground caves as the youngers learn what it means to be shot at is one of many exciting, tense moments. The violence is there in short fast action scenes but simply to emphasize the whole gangster environment.

Lots of unusual situations and with the Italian you can 'feel' the tension and excitement. It really is a very good gangster movie. Seen with subtitles its so much more realistic and this is what you are getting to see - real live action amongst the Mafia gangland culture. Superb photography and characterization - so much effort has gone into the 'realism' of the film which makes it that much better than the average blockbuster. The script and dialogue are perfect. You never want the film to end. Honest to god its real life entertainment. . . . . . . utterly convincing.
