Sheer class --- a work of art.

In every film afficianados top 20 films of all time, I suppose. And I cannot disagree. In fact, many viewers would have great difficulty in arguing against a commonly-held view that this is the best film ever made ( and when you set it against 'Citizen Kane' this movie would certainly get my vote over Orson Welles' over-rated offering). Actually, 'Gone With The Wind' is not my favourite film of all time, but there is no doubt that it is a superlative movie on every level.
Of all the millionas of words ever written about this film, I suspect the main controversy lies in whether Vivien Leigh was the correct choice to play Scarlett. I often pose the question to myself and try to picture Paulette Goddard (because she would have been my personal choice at the time of production) but I find it to be a completely fruitless exercise. The movie is perfect and Vivien Leigh IS Scarlett O'Hara --- and that just ends any controversy.
Gable was born to play his role and, of all the other perfectly-cast players, I would single out Leslie Howard who seems to have stepped straight out of Margaret Mitchell's mind and onto the screen.
It's not very often, with a long epic film, that a viewer longs for an extra hour to be added on to an already very long film. But that is what this particular viewer has always wished LOL.
Nothing to say that hasn't been said already over the last 70 years. We've all seen it, we all love it and we always will.
PS
I suppose there must be some Mongolian yak-herder who hasn't seen it (or even one of our younger viewers brought up on 'teenagers spend the night in a morgue with vampires'). Sell all your yaks, throw out your teenage vampire films and watch a work of art that will stay at the top of the ratings forever.- Was this review helpful to you?

Having already auditioned half of Hollywood royalty, it was a British actress who landed the plum role, and rightly so. She played it so well, i hated the character for half the film for being such a spoilt and indulged miss. The rest was a respect for such a determined woman. Stunning actress and a talent that has few competitors. Rhett Butler could not have being played by anyone whatsoever other than Clark Gable. He oozes charm, smarm and ooh la la! (I think he was my first cinematic crush!!) De Havilland was superb as Melanie, the kind hearted and forgiving woman. I really cannot emphasise enough just what an experience it was and is watching this film over the years. If you have not watched this yet, you really need to. Gone with the wind - missing second half

absolutely wonderful
By a customer , 17 Dec 2012one of the most beautiful, classic , iconic words of all time. if you have never seen, watch it now. Viviene Leigh beautiful and stunning opposite Clark Gable. Scarlett is ridiculously witty, she is a brilliant character!

The cinematography is breathtaking. Each scene is luxurious in detail. The costumes are decadent and sumptuous, Scarlett O'Hara glides around in brilliantly over-sized gowns and ringleted ebony hair in bows.
The film is long. I think 30 minutes less wouldve make a perfect duration but the story covers such alot of history that I could undergo being slightly bored for small periods.
Scarlett is a unique character, her boldness and exaggerated use of language is ridiculously witty, especially to a modern audience.
Rhett Butler is smug and smouldering, he is Scarlett's hero. I could not help but be a little smitten by him- Was this review helpful to you?
