Gonza The Spearman

One of the key works of Masahiro Shinoda [Double Suicide], Gonza the Spearman is an adaptation of a bunraku, or puppet theatre play, by the famous writer Chikamatsu. This 1717 tale of doomed love is transferred to the screen in a glorious visual presentation that seems to quote prints, scrolls and screens of the period. As with other great jidaigeki, or period pieces, this romance from the samurai period sharply contrasts public and private morality, as well as the opposing claims of duty and love.
