Dull
By Rip from Manchester , 18 Apr 2009[Highly rated reviewer]
[Highly rated reviewer]
I found this rather dull and unenlightening. It is a film about someone who seemed to be respected for being deliberately obtuse or contrary for the sake of it. This behaviour always gets rather tiring after the first two times.
I may have been too hasty and not given the film a chance but it failed to capture my interest.- Was this review helpful to you?

(29)Watch Only if into Thompsonmania
By Cato (705 reviews) from Lydbury North , 02 May 2012I couldn't understand why this film was rated as an X. Was it because of the language, or because of the suggestion that the Hell's Angels had performed a gang bang on a willing participant? Anyway, that's by the by, as this docufilm was in fact pretty boring unless you were really into people taking as many drugs and as much alcohol as possible, and listening toi ex politicians going along with Thompson's undoubted skills at writing about what he thought was wrong about American culture. And listening to Johnny Depp rabbiting on about what a great person Hunter S. was.- Was this review helpful to you?

Gonzo: the myth, mystic and mess.
By Platospupil (195 reviews) , 28 Jan 2012Amongst all the vain-glory of the celebrity-seeking world panting after the fame of a moment comes this.
At one level Hunter S Thompson epitomizes the conundrum .. written in his own words as one of the worst offenders. At another he is the mirror, echoing back from a broken surface the distortions and tragedies of the age.
The film does a good job in capturing this extraordinary man, holding him and his friends and lovers up to us for scrutiny and asking us to make the judgement. Hero or coward? Freak or terribly, awfully normal? Another broken dreamer?
I tend to a more optimistic view. Burned bright but clearly not to be sustained beyond a few brief years. A joy to behold.- Was this review helpful to you?

Pure Gonzo
By Honey-bunny (3 reviews) , 04 Aug 2011If you don't know who Hunter S Thompson is, you should feel quite ashamed. Creator of Gonzo journalism, pioneer in his own right, writer, idol, legend.
For those of you who do know the man behind 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,' you will love this! And watch out for those damn bats!- Was this review helpful to you?

The right kind of eyes
By Nootlin (114 reviews) from London , 27 Jul 2011'[Hunter] drove everybody bats**t nuts. Hunter was my friend and neighbour, the man who never paid his rent, broke up my marriage and taught my children to smoke dope' - George Stranahan, Hunter's landlord.
A brilliantly made documentary on the life and times of a unique literary hero, evoking a period in American history where the buttoned down fifties died in a car crash with the tie-dyed sixties and seventies. Hunter was at the wheel, thrown clear and emerging unscathed, dusting himself off as the bats rushed him from all sides.
The filmmakers have gathered a lot of excellent documentary footage, and tell the gun-toting, hell-raising story of Hunter and his invention of Gonzo writing* in a precise and funny way. It made me want to go back and read ALL of his books. Hunter had a rare (sometimes drug-enduced) way of seeing the world, and he is missed. RIP.
Great soundtrack also.
*Gonzo is a style of writing where the journalist's efforts themselves often become as important (if not more so) as the story they are attempting to cover. Where traditional reporting tried to be objective, this is a wholly subjective and often humourous (especially in respect to Hunter S. Thompson) style of writing.- Was this review helpful to you?
