"Gonzo" is the definitive film biography of a mythic American figure, a man that Tom Wolfe called our "greatest comic writer," whose suicide, by gunshot, led Rolling Stone Magazine, where Thompson began his career, to devote an entire issue (its bestselling ever) to the man that launched a thousand sips of bourbon, endless .. I found this rather dull and unenlightening. It is a film about someone who seemed to be respected for being deliberately obtuse or contrary for the sake of it. This behaviour always gets rather tiring after the first two times.
I may have been too hasty and not given the film a chance but it failed to capture my interest.
I picked this film for something a bit different - it is very interesting to see all kinds of archive footage - but it would help viewers if they knew something of Dr HS Thompson's work and life beforehand which I know is an obvious thing to say!
This documentary is one of the most engrossing I have seen in quite some time. It was a fitting tribute to Hunter S. Thompson and it really showed his brilliance while also capturing a vivid portrait of his life. I knew his work and read it before watching this, but unexpepectedly, I learnt more by watching this documentary. A fantastic film, brilliantly paced and genuinely moving. I urge all to watch this...(if you're interested in Hunter and his work!).

If you love Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas and didn't know much about the author...do your self a favor and watch this documentary. It's an up close and personal look inside a very colorful character. 8/10

Gonzo is one crazy guy and real. This portrayal exposed facts (to me at least) about his life that I knew nothing about. I enjoyed the narration by Johnny Depp and the candidness by which Hunter exposes his oddness. Forever a fan of the man.

Well I was really looking forward to this one being a massive Hunter fan. Its good but drags on a bit. Theres stuff here which I hadnt seen before but a lot that I had. I found the book 'Gonzo' much more funny and truer to the legend that is Hunter. Definitely worth a watch if youre a Hunter fan though!
Just Brilliant - I am very interested in Dr. Hunter S. Thompson anyway but this documentary footage and testamonials gives a fantastic potrayal of the man, his work and how he ticks.
It doesnt disappoint. A true one off mind and man. Legend.
Firstly I want to say that this is a fascinating documentary about this ex Rolling Stone journalist. It talks about his life, his career as a journalist, the stories that he covered for the Rolling Stone magazine (some of which were completely hilarious) and the story he wrote about going to Vegas that was created into the film 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' starring Johnny Depp and Benecio del Toro.
It really annoys me to see so many of the reviewers on this site saying that this doc is rubbish, I completely disagree. I feel that unless you were interested in Hunter S Thompson, his work for the Rolling Stone, the artist Ralph Steadman etc... Your view of the documentary will be bland and borderline irrelevant - for those of us who are interested in Hunter Thompson's work. Hunter Thompson was a fascinating character.
The doc is well done and has parts were Johnny Depp is narrating. You get to learn about the different stories that Hunter was acclaimed for. I have now developed a huge interest in the artwork of Ralph Steadman, which is shown in this doc. I feel that people who were interested in Hunter S Thompson, will enjoy this doc more.
Having read a few of Dr Thompsons books, I was expecinng him to be a wild revelutionary. In some ways he was. He has been an inspiring writer to many, no doubt.
Unfortunately, the film does seem to paint him as a somewhat pretentious arse.
That is the strange paradoxical nature of Dr H Thompson.
Can't say I feel a warm glow knowing him better? no , but, do drug monkeys ever seem as much fun when you meet them? I don't know.
Can't say I like the idea of a revolutionary riding the hippy wave being a gun-nut either.
Having read 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' and 'Hells Angels', during the last year, I found myself very intrigued about Hunter S Thompson. This film is a thoroughly interesting documentary about the life of a very enigmanic, egomaniac, genius. The style of the documentary is as quirky as the man himself and does require concentration to not get lost by it's deliberate chaos. Whether you like the man or not, or his writing, this is a stylish and engaging documentary that is nicely knitted together by various readings from Thompson's work, read by Johnny Depp (star of the movie version of 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas').
