In 1965, there isn't much for military personnel serving in Vietnam to smile about--that is, until deejay Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) takes to the airwaves. In GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM, which is based on a true story, Cronauer is a nonconformist with a wicked sense of humor who is transferred from Crete to Saigon. Outrageous .. Read more

Robin Williams received an Oscar nomination for giving here what is essentially a stand-up comedy performance. He plays a motormouth disc jockey sent to Vietnam to entertain the GIs, but, in the event, adds rather more salt, pepper and hot sauce to the place than the military brass would have preferred. Based on the case of a real US armed forces DJ, the film is distinctive for being Hollywood's first Vietnam comedy and among the first movies to treat the Vietnamese themselves as real people. The action loses its way, however, whenever the film tries to get serious, but when Williams is behind the studio mike, it offers a decent showcase for his virtuosic talents. If Williams is not to your taste, there's still the superb 1960s soundtrack to enjoy.

    Comedy ahead of its time

Adrian Cronauer appeared on American airwaves at roughly the same time that UK's Kenny Everett appeared on Radio 1. And they had a lot more in common - making up characters with zany voices to amuse and disturb listeners with a sense of humour that was a few years before its time.

Cronauer's problem was that he was recruited by the American army to broadcast to the GI's in Vietnam - an army broadcasting service that would have been far more comfortable with a watered down Jimmy Young than Kenny Everett. So Cronauer - played with absolute zest by Robin Williams freed up to do pretty much whatever he wanted on set - had a tough time of Vietnam.

But the GI's loved him! You will too.

    Funny in Parts

You have to be a Robin Williams fan to enjoy this movie because he does let loose in some parts. Its based in Vietnam so there is a serious part to it but as Robin Williams is a radio DJ he does go mad on the mike.

    A Classic

Robin Williams at his finest, an absolute must see movie. One of the finest mixtures of humour and pathos to hit the screens.

    Not bad

The first time I saw this it felt like watching Robin Williams do a stand-up show in a uniform & it hasn't really changed. He is great in it but the film treats its subject too lightly at times for me - it works as a comedy but not a war film. Still a good film though - not much in the way of support but then Williams doesn't need much to carry this film. Nice soundtrack, too.

    This rocks......

Probably one of Williams best performances of this career, the comedic moments of the charater are offset by the harshness and frustration of life in the forces. But dont think this is all Williams, the stonking sound track and the strong supporting case (especially 'Garlic') make this film one of the must watch's

Largely a vehicle for the frenetic irreverence of Robin Williams, enjoyed by many for the 60s hits used copiously on the soundtrack.
