LOVEFiLM Review Good Night and Good Luck

  • 3 stars out of 5

    By Tom Charity from LOVEFiLM

With Good Night, and Good Luck, George Clooney delivers a riveting account of a crucial chapter in 20th Century American history and, in the process, firmly establishes himself as a major force behind the camera as well.

Most helpful review Good Night and Good Luck

  • Exquisite...

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Who would have thought? Pretty boy ‘Gorgeous George’ Clooney, man of ER fame (and Batman & Robin infamy) has made one of the best films of the last few years.

'Good Night, and Good' Luck is quite simply extraordinary. Clooney’s direction is crisp, wry and intelligent, his writing taut, and his overall vision has resulted in a unique and unforgettable cinematic experience.

Tackling the McCarthy witch-hunt from the standpoint of a CBS newsroom, this is a historical film loaded with relevance for today’s heated political climate. Some might argue that the film’s view is too narrow, that we learn next to nothing about the characters’ private lives.

But that would be looking at it the wrong way: 'Good Night, and Good Luck' is a rare thing. It is a movie that knows exactly what it wants to do, and does it, brilliantly. Loaded with superb performances, exquisitely shot in black and white, this is the movie event of the year.

See it. You won’t regret it.

  • Stunning film on many fronts

This is far from being your average run of the mill film that often makes much of the on screen relationships to the detriment of historical facts. This is a sharp portrayal of what occured through CBS during the 'reign' of McCarthy, before his downfall. It helps to know your history before you see this film, but if you don't, it's a good reason to do some investigation of your own. It is set during the 1950's, but I believe resonates through many levels; showing how misguided beliefs can ruin lives.

George Clooney just grows in my eyes with this very polished and assured handling, both as writer and director. He's getting better behind the lens than in front of it.

David Strathairn is an inspired choice to lead this brilliant cast.

  • Tedious Music - Good Film

Why dont I like that suicidal smokey room jazz like saxophone masturbatory dreary elevator muzack???

Dont know. But there is too much of it in this film.

One other criticism is that its lacking a little in context background and ultimately consequence of the events portrayed. Perhaps thats my ignorance showing.

Apart from these two minor and admittedly personal critiques this is a great movie that inter splices drama with real life documentary footage of what was a nasty time for freedom of speech in the US.

  • Thought provoking and visually beautiful if one-sided

An excellent if narrow view of McCarthyism, Good Night and Good Luck demonstrates the power of the popular media in the face of political and institutional pressure. Expert cinematography combined with stunningly poised performances makes this film a must see, with added merit in the form of period footage of Senator Joseph McCarthy hard at work.

If this film has a weakness, it fails to show the events depicted within the American anti-communist culture and psyche of the 1950s making it slightly narrow in its representation and making McCarthy seem like a man secretly hated by all. As a contemporary historian myself, I notice the deference towards Murrow and CBS which the film offers. The uninformed viewer will see Ed Murrow as the people's hero, which whilst a common view, was far from the universal view of 1950s America.

Certainly a memorable film, it has a cerebral nature and is thought provoking not only for Americans, but for any citizen of the world interested in examining democracy and its limitations.

  • Good film - could've been better

Perhaps more relevant to Americans, this is a very good film - set in a time when America was as prohibited as they believed 'those damned Communists!' to be.

The B&W really helped sell the 1950's too. The only downside is that, even for a dialogue orientated film, there isn't much drama or conflict.

  • Fairly interesting but dull

It was an interesting film and the David Strathairn character Ed Murrow was I believe very well drawn even though I have no knowledge or memory of the man himself. It just felt real. However there was very little about the McCarthy witchhunt itself and how it developed and subsequently ended to show the viewer just what an important episode in American history this was. To me the film just came across as a story about a period in a TV newsroom's life.
