Exploring the grey areas of complicity with the crimes of Nazi Germany is in vogue at the minute: after Valkyrie... read more on Time Out
A very affecting film, with superb acting and competent direction. It is particularly refreshing to see a historical hero to be portrayed fully, and as a complex individual, including less desireable traits and reluctance to put himself in danger. After all, this was a terrifying time for those who did not agree with the Nazi movement, and no doubt highly confusing. An emotional and recommended film.
A new take on the horrors of the holocaust. Viggo Mortensen is totally believable as the author who is unwillingly drawn into joining the Nazi party because he wrote a book describing euthanasia. It s a book they can use to support their twisted ideologies. He isn't antisemitic in any way, and has numerous jewish friends, but the spiralling circumstances of the time force him to embrace the party line. It's a compelling story, well acted and photographed but ultimately it just isn't interesting enough. We know exactly what is going to happen from the outset which makes the movie very dreary i.e. there is no hope for John Halder so we basically watch him being personally destroyed by circumstance. Worthy but not entertaining. Average 3 stars.

He tells Total Film magazine, "Making Good was a very bleak time for me because I felt like I had a responsibility to revisit the Holocaust so I read only diaries from the time. "It gave me an insight into the many... Read more
