Immensely enjoyable with a glorious cast of BBC thespians and comedians.

The Director’s interpretation of Gormenghast is superb and creates a timeless world, which is dark and ominous but also touched with fairy tale turrets and balconies. The acting is faultless, too many fine performances to mention, with a mixture of overwrought drama and laugh out loud comedy. They manage to effectively blur the line between good and evil, so by the end you’re not entirely sure who you should be rooting for!

I’ve read the books and in my opinion this is an excellent adaptation. A minor criticism might be that the production feels a little dated in the special effects department. It could have also been a few episodes longer as there are plenty of fabulous characters to explore further, with their own interesting side stories. At times the storyline feels rushed, as if we’ve missed out important elements.

Overall, thoroughly entertaining and recommended.
