GOTHIKA stars Halle Berry as Dr. Miranda Grey, a psychiatrist who becomes a patient in her own mental hospital after she is accused of murdering her husband (Charles S. Dutton). For this overblown horror effort, director Mathieu Kassovitz deploys every cliché in the book — and then moves on to volume two. Halle Berry plays a distinguished psychiatrist who, after a devastating car crash, finds herself incarcerated in her own asylum accused of the bloody murder of her husband. She has no memory of these events and, to make matters worse, is haunted by ghostly images of a young girl. Could there be a connection? As a rule, understatement is always more effective with horror movies, but it's a rule that is ignored here with endless, portentous thunderstorms and pale-faced ghouls that leap out of dark corners. Kassovitz seems happy to mix these clichés with elements pilfered from The Sixth Sense and Ring, among others. The result is mostly ridiculous and — with the exception of a couple of cynically engineered but effective jolts — resolutely unscary.

Lurid, overblown horror with unconvincing supernatural trimmings.
The movie is dreadful. Halle Berry has had a makeover to look ugly, the plot is thinner than kate moss and the acting is filth. It's about as scary as Neighbours and is so dull I ended up speed drinking a bottle of Gin to repress my loathsome anger. My fault though, I kind of knew it would be crap.
.....and was very pleasantly surprised......in some cases surprised out of my chair!
A proper old fashioned ghost story is how I would describe this movie, lots of jumping and catching of breath, but underneath all of that a fantastic suspense thriller which had me guessing till the end, when it finally dawned on me what was going on, I was shouting at the TV screen at Halle Berry's character, Miranda.
This is not the kind of movie I would watch at night as it did get the grey matter ticking overtime, but was very enjoyable in the brilliant sunshine of an afternoon of quietness.
Good viewing, good story, good strong characters, with Robert Downey Jnr putting in his usual great performance and Halle Berry playing a thoroughly convincing "loonie but I'm not really".
This is a movie that will have you on the edge of your seat right until the end. Sent chills down my back and i never visited the loo once.
Really enjoyed this and have watched it many times. Halle Berry is reasonably good as the scared maiden but some aspects of the plot don't seem to link up. They are shown as being magical or spiritual but explained as to do with medication. Still a good film to watch. Robert Downey JR good as always.
'Gothika' is an above-average ghost story/mystery film, but has a really interesting ending. The plot revolves around Dr. Miranda Grey (Halle Berry), a very smart and successful person who works at a mental institution for women. After a mysterious experience on a lone country road one night after work, she wakes up in the institution in which she works, when she learns of a horrific event and is the prime suspect.
A well photographed and moody horror movie, 'Gothika' is an above-average supernatural thriller with a wonderfully executed twist and some great performances. Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr., and Penelope Cruz are all amazing in their roles. Especially Halle Berry, she holds a strong performance throughout the entire film as the main character who is going through an unimaginable experience. The story is well written and there are plenty of plot twists and turns that keep the viewer's interest the entire way through the film. Dark, moody and a great piece of entertainment.

A really gripping film that had us at the end of our chairs. Plus a few good twists to add extra suspense!
Both my fiance and I highly rate this one, so much so we are going to buy it!
So-so chiller that didn't quite work for me. It looks suitably dark and foreboding but Halle Berry is too weak for the lead role in this type of film. In fact the only film I've seen her in, where she really convinces, is Monsters Ball (5 stars for that one Halle!)
This film on the other hand, is full of cliches - sexy psychologist who always has a textbook explanation for her patient's crazy ramblings, ends up 'crazy' herself and guess what - now her colleagues don't believe her either! There are genuinely scary moments but they aren't enough to glue the film together, plus I half-guessed the 'twist' about 30 mins before it arrived. Cruz is better. The superb Downey is wasted (You get the feeling this one was definitely for the hard cash).
Still, it's an ok watch if there's nothing on telly.
Halle Berry plays a psychologist whom works in a mental unit, she ends up there herself and is mentally tortured, the story develops and some action sequences occur developing into a chase.
Overall not bad but ends disappointingly.
Halle Berry wakes up in her own Pyschiatric hospital after she crashes her car & blacks out. After evaluation she is deemed a bit whacko. We then find out a few interesting things happened after the crash & then it all goes 'Pete Tong' for Miss Berry. Some genuinely spooky moments with a few good jumpy bits. Well acted from Berry & Downey Jnr. I liked it but it seemed to nick a few ideas from other films.
I am afraid I found this deeply disappointing, and utterly unconvincing. Poor characterisation and contrived plot development along with mainly poor performances - only Penelope Cruz emerges with any real credit.
I expected quite a lot of this film and ended up extremely dissapointed with it. I was waiting for the frightening bits and waited and waited to no avail.
Halle Berry's performance was reasonable but it just did not deliver the goods.
I wouldn't watch this again if you paid me!!
I have seen this film twice and will probably see it again. How can anyone not like this film? It has scary moments, a good plot, unpredictable events, great acting from Halle Berry, the glamour of Halle Berry (she looks stunning in this film), everything you could wish for!!!!!!! It scared me especially when after watching it my circuit breaker tripped in my house and all the lights went off!!!!!! I was expecting to see a ghost. One of the best and scariest ghost stories I have ever seen. Don't expect the action all the time but when it does happen its scary. Watch it at night for best effect!
