Gounod faust

This is an excellent interpretation of the classic opera. The scenary is spectacular and the directors interpretation very good. For the purists - the moving of the chapel scene to near the end of the opera works well. However one scene(Walpurgis Night) is omitted but does not detract from an overall excellent performance- Was this review helpful to you?

Unfotunately this dvd shows its age, which is a pitty as the staging and scenery are without doubt the best available. Other performances of Faust have better all round performers, with possibly the exception if Ruggero Raimondi as Mephistopheles who was excellent. The picture would probably be well served with blu ray treatment, as it is no longer good. The staging is worthy of five stars, but the age means drop of two stars.- Was this review helpful to you?
