Jane Horrocks stars in this BBC romantic comedy based on the life of wartime singer, actor and entertainer of the troops Gracie Fields. The film begins at the height of Gracie's fame in 1939. After suffering a serious illness, Gracie decides to take a break. But then war breaks out and, as enthusiastic as ever despite her exhaustion, Gracie volunteers to do her duty to her fans and country by touring France, singing to the troops and raising money for Spitfires. After years of friendship, she marries the Italian-born Hollywood director Monty Banks (Tom Hollander), and is forced to choose between loyalty to her husband and loyalty to her country when Italy enters the war. Songs featured in the film include 'Sally', 'Sing As We Go' and 'I Never Cried So Much In All My Life'.

Who really knew Gracie Fields?

My husband and I watched this film because we both had vague memories of Gracie and have to admit it opened our eyes to some of her life experiences which we were unaware of - assuming they were true! Well acted and interesting to watch but may not be of interest to the wider public! However, we 'enjoyed' it!

we didn't enjoy this D V D at all not very well done and not the Gracie I remember as a young child very poor casting also
