Most helpful review Grand Canyon - The Hidden Secrets

  • Brilliant pictures but too short!

    [Highly rated reviewer]

When we visited the Grand Canyon last year we only had a short time there and didn't manage to get below the rim. This DVD helped fill that gap with some stunning photography and a little of the history of the Canyon and its exploration. My only real criticism is that the film is too short! The 'Extra feature' about the making of the film was also interesting and showed the difficulties faced by the film-makers.

  • Dated and short

The movie was originally filmed in Imax, the reproduction on a domestic set up probably does not have the impact the director could acheive in a huge movie theatre. The story of the canyon is told from the perspective of its human inhabitants for the last couple of thousand years. Cue much Native Americans rubbing sticks together while (sometimes) wearing loincloths footage. The narration is too grandiose for my tastes - probably worked pretty well in Imax though. maybe good for kids about to make a trip as the human element would add interest. Fairly short too - so they wouldn't be bored.

  • Stunning images but presentation and content poor

    Rated - 2.0 stars

It seems a shame to only award this 2 stars as the images and camera work are absolutely stunning so for that side of things I would award 5 stars. But, having said that, the presentation and content really don't do it justice. First of all, it is only 30 minutes in length and secondly, by the title being hidden secrets I was expecting some insight into the geology and formation of this natural wonder. Instead the hidden secrets refers to the images they capture, which are breathtaking and I would recommend that you watch 'The Making Of' Section first and this will help you appreciate this. It will also help you understand the angle they have taken on the presentation format which is a short film of the first natives then Europeans to discover the area. I was thoroughly disappointed as I had expected the geological aspect to be investigated. If you are more interested in this side of things then I would recommend an excellent DVD I recently viewed 'Living Rock' which mainly focuses on North America and briefly touches on Grand Canyon.
