A harmless, fairly humorous family film about a clever mule who teams up with an elderly gold prospector (Dick Foran). Norman Foster's movie, based on the novel by Marguerite Henry and shot on location, also features Joseph Cotten, while Karl Swenson plays Theodore Roosevelt. The real star, however, is the Grand Canyon itself.

A sentimental account of urban unease, and one that offers glib answers to the questions it raises, but at least it does raise questions.

    Outstanding

This is movie-making at its most thoughtful, intelligent and provocative. Kevin Kline and Steve Martin turn in beautifully nuanced performances that manage to provide the comedy for which they are deservedly renowned but without the mania or slapstick, just subtle, perfectly under-stated, rich character-studies that linger long after the credits have rolled. The same goes for the rest of the cast, without exception. Well worth watching. And perhaps re-watching. Kasdan has given us another gem.

Good quality film. Relationship drama. We thought that the recent film 'Crash' copied 'Grand Canyon' in some way (we watched both but liked 'Grand Canyon' much more).

    Bad Clothes, Good Film

I was meant to be going to bed when I first caught this film on TV moments after it had started, knowing absolutely nothing about it. It's opening scenes were so impressive, however, that I had to watch the whole thing.

The writing is good and performances are strong (although by my second viewing, just recently, the Steve Martin character had worn a bit thin.) Sure there's loads of sentiment oozing about, but how can you touch on the big things in life without it?

Seen today, the film does have a late-eighties style that hasn't worn well, but for me Grand Canyon is in similar territory as American Beauty.

    Good film

Very moving and hard hitting, with comedy thrown in, but not overwelming the overall film

gets a little boring after a while

A good film but has too many stories running parallel to each other. Starts off really well but then tends to lose the plot.

Good star cast, however gets a little boring after a while.

    Poor man's Crash

Watchable film with a story line similar to but much less hard hitting than the superior Crash. Forgettable performances from most of the cast (except Danny Glover) and found Mary MacDonald very irritating to watch but that might be just me!

    thought provoking

well worth a watch if your bored at home for the afternoon. Take the time to think about the events as they unravel during the movie and you will enjoy it a whole lot more, ps. was Steve Martin born with grey hair?

    The cracks run deep

Like a dry-run for the more ambitious 'Short Cuts', this remarkable film is apparently about nothing but sneaks up on you and makes you realise that you have to find your place in the world. 6 interconnected characters find life in the war zone that is present day Los Angeles increasingly hard to bear. And then one by one, they become exposed to the little miracles that fill up our days and which we're all too busy to see. America might be going to pot, says Kasdan, but there's always hope. It's a reaffirming thing to learn, and that's what makes this movie great.
