Director Lawrence Kasdan's Grand Canyon is a gathering of random events, uniting the film's wildly divergent protagonists. Driving home from an LA Lakers game, Mack (Kevin Kline), an immigration attorney, is stranded in an unsavory part of town when his car breaks down. He is rescued from a gang of hoods by Simon (Danny Glover), an African-American tow truck driver, inaugurating a friendship between these two men. Mack offers to repay Simon's kindness by helping his sister (Tina Lifford) find an apartment in a better neighborhood, and by arranging a blind date between Simon and Jane (Alfre Woodard), a friend of Mack's secretary Dee (Mary Louise Parker). Woven into this fabric are the tribulations of Mack's best friend, a pompous exploitation movie producer (Steve Martin), who is later wounded in a robbery similar to the one threatening Mack at the beginning of the film; of Mack's wife Claire (Mary McDonnell), who adopts an abandoned baby, and disenfranchised son Roberto (Jeremy Sisto); and of Simon's nephew (Patrick Malone), who is contemplating joining a street gang. This is movie-making at its most thoughtful, intelligent and provocative. Kevin Kline and Steve Martin turn in beautifully nuanced performances that manage to provide the comedy for which they are deservedly renowned but without the mania or slapstick, just subtle, perfectly under-stated, rich character-studies that linger long after the credits have rolled. The same goes for the rest of the cast, without exception. Well worth watching. And perhaps re-watching. Kasdan has given us another gem.

Fantastic film

This was recommended by a fellow movie addict- kinda happy they brought it to my attention despite not being able to find it anywhere at first. Brilliant feel good movie which shows how things still manage to go wrong despite doing everything right. Follows the relationships between several families and how they cope with violence, heartbreak, falling in love and just trying to be normal in todays society. There are gangs wandering the streets killing others and people scared to make their own decisions and letting others do so.Very moving and inspirational- brought a tear to my eye. Brilliant cast involved, just a great movie to sit down and watch if needing to cheer yourself up

Poor man's Crash

Watchable film with a story line similar to but much less hard hitting than the superior Crash. Forgettable performances from most of the cast (except Danny Glover) and found Mary MacDonald very irritating to watch but that might be just me!

Good quality film. Relationship drama. We thought that the recent film 'Crash' copied 'Grand Canyon' in some way (we watched both but liked 'Grand Canyon' much more).
