This is undeniably a 'bad' movie in any generally accepted definition, but has such a guileless and niave charm that this really doesn't matter!
I always say to my kids that if you play a game you should play it straight, try to win, have fun but laugh if you fail! - this film is the perfect embodiment of that spirit!!
I think that it has become more than just a movie, anyway. Cult classics are films that live beyond the cinematic experience. This film falls into that category; you find yourself singing those corny songs, laughing at the bizarre script in an affectionate way. This film lives with you (like warts!). I love it, it's a camp classic. It has more laughs (perhaps unintentionally) and charm packed into its 90 minutes than others of its ilk.
The performances have all the earnest of a Sixth Form School Play. Each individual fails in such an unique, stylish but ultimately engaging way! Particular 'credit' here goes to Pfeiffer and Caulfield (with his cut glass English accent).
The script is B-movie bad. If this film was a pastiche it would be genius, they wrote it straight, they act it straight which makes it so humorous!!
The songs are very good. Some of them 'Reproduction' and 'Cool Rider' are excellent - and I mean that in an unironic sense! You can't help but be drawn into the movie and become a litle Pink Lady/T-bird just like in Grease.
In short, I would recommend this film to the hilt, I actually enjoyed this one more than Grease, which admittedly was a better film. It needs to be seen for what it is a low budget rip-off of a classic cinematic event !! It is pure camp class. Hysterical, engaging, sometimes cringe-making, moving and even exciting - hear those motorbikes roar!!
Everyone should watch this at least once. Go rent it now .... You wont be disappointed (possibly!!!)
