The lives and works of three of history's greatest composers are examined in this programme which originally appeared as part of the BBC's Great Composers television series. The point of departure for the study of the lives of Tchaikovsky, Puccini and Mahler is the music itself, and extensive footage of their work (featuring, among others, Solti, Cura and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra) supports interviews and comment from eminent musicians, conductors and music-lovers.

The video is interesting and worth watching, as there are few similar alternatives. The real problem with the whole series is that the lives of the artists seem to be centred on a single theme. For example, Tschaikovsky's homosexuality, Wagner's antisemitism, Puccini's marital infidelities, etc. And in the hour or so of each video, even these narrow views of the lives of the artists are not treated as carefully and deeply. A good book is certainly more informative, but, with this caveat, I would recommend anyhow. The series is well presented and there are some good short interviews with famous interpreters.
