Great expectations not rewarded

I was very disappointed in this very American adaptation of 'Great Expectations'. It lost the brooding quality of the earlier black and white version and the TV serial. It also left too many of the novel's themes out.

The whole focus was on the love story, which didn't convince despite the big name actors involved. Updating Dickens is fine with me but this was flat and boring. Pity. It could have been much more as the photography was beautiful.
