The first segment of William Klein's seminal portrait of a sporting legend begins in the monochrome days of 1964 and chronicles the furore that surrounded the then Cassius Clay at the time of his notorious bouts with Sonny Liston. Accompanying him on the road and into the changing rooms, director Klein produces Direct Cinema at its most immediate and provides an intimate insight into the fighter's lifestyle, emerging showmanship and growing potency as a black superstar in the Civil Rights era. The second half of this superb biography was filmed a decade after Clay's triumphs over Liston, by which time The Louisville Lip was known as Muhammad Ali and on his way to his greatest victory at the Rumble in the Jungle in Zaire. With Michael Mann's biopic Ali about to be released, this is a timely opportunity to see the man himself in all his unforgettable glory.
If you are going to see a documentary about Muhammad Ali, don't bother with this one - see When We Were Kings. It is a far more in depth look at Ali with more Ali clips and narratives - this one is merely a documentary with a lot of still pictures of Ali, some action sequences but is mainly a narrative about his life. Very very disappointing, particularly after seeing When We Were Kings and being blown away by it.
This mainly consists of archive film footage rarely seen and not all that exciting. It is only for reral fans insisted in the social history as well as the legend.
