It's a pity that Lovefilm so often list titles that they do not actually have - I can only guess they do so to gauge their customers interests through the reservation system and purchase accordingly. However, as this film is still sadly unavailable on DVD, any jubilation upon discovering here will be short-lived. For anyone interested in silent cinema and the key innovations of the period, this is a pivotal film. Pathologically self-destructive director Erich Von Stroheim watched this masterpice endure a fate not dissimilar to Orson Welles' THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS . We are only left with a fraction of the actual work but, like the Welles film, what we have is still a deeply moving and lastingly influential creation. Find it on EBay or look out for it on TCM. Even better is 'Greed Restored' - the four hour restoration which uses stills of the missing sequences - but good luck with finding it!
