Gérard Depardieu's much-anticipated English language debut was, to some extent, lost in the fuss created by the revelations about his wild youth that appeared around the time of its release. Despite being unoriginal, full of narrative improbabilities and not as funny as it should be, this easy-going comedy from director Peter Weir has undeniable charm and features two thoroughly engaging performances, with Andie MacDowell winning you over to her initially cold, calculating Manhattanite. Weir is a little heavy-handed with the comic set pieces, but he develops the romance with some care and turns the immigration inquiry into a nail-biting tear-jerker. It's slight and trite, but so what?

    entertaining

one of gerard depardieu's earlier films.

he is well contrasted to the lovely andie mcdowell in this romantic comedy.

some super scenes...watch him play piano as never seen before!!

    suprise ending...

    Uninspiring

This is a bog standard run of the mill “chick flick”. Something you can go watch with your girlfriend for a nice romantic evening. Apart from that this movie cannot serve any other purpose. Andie MacDowell’s performance is appalling unlike Gerard Depardieu. I suppose there are a couple of funny moments but not worth seeing the whole movie for.

    Good Fun

Just the ticket (or card) for a Saturday early evening film. (We needed to get it in before CSI Files on TV!)

Just good fun but pleasantly filmed and acted. Good to see some places in Central Park where we've visited. Music excellent and appropriate.

    Enjoyable

It was written in the description that it was a romantic comedy. I would say it is a fusion of a romantic comedy and light drama. Enjoyable. Both, Gerard Depardieu and Andie MacDowell, are great.

    Still Entertaining

Even after all these years this is still a very good film that is well worth watching.

    Easy watching

This was a good chick flick and made enjoyable evening viewing. Love outcome was of course predictable.

    worth a watch

This film i think is worth watching once, its not a film you will want to watch over and over again. It is slightly outdated now but a few good laughs to be had. One for the ladies i think definately not a blokey film!

sorry but this film had nothing what so ever, it couldn't even keep me awake while watching it, so i can't tell you what a wonderful ending it might of had.
