  • Watchable but depressing

    [Highly rated reviewer]

A film with little discernible story arc and in which the main character is a fairly pathetic and obnoxious guy who is aiming to 'do nothing for a while' is always going to risk losing the audience or crossing over into tedium.

Stiller's character (Greenberg) is not so much to be enjoyed as endured but that is the point. It's a story about this broken time in his life of loneliness and regret for missed opportunities long gone.

Gerwig's (Florence) acting style (described as organic / farmer's-market by the Guardian's Peter Bradshaw) rescues the film for me though and I found the awkward development of the relationship between Greenberg and Florence at least compelling, though uncomfortable.

Overall, you won't be left with a nice fuzzy feeling but you may be pleased you endured to the end.

This comes across as a L. A. version of a Woody Allen movie - one of his films where the lead character is snide and self-absorbed. True, he's just gotten out of a mental hospital and has trouble connecting with people. But his sudden relationship with his brother's housekeeper is an improbability too far (though in her own way, she's as messed up as he is). It may paint an accurate picture of life in the City of Angels and the actors are certainly committed but irritation is the main feeling that this film will engender.

This is not a 'Ben Stiller movie TM' as some people would expect. Don't expect it to be a comedy either, it's deeper than that. The rhythm is intentionally different, the jokes understated and awkward and there is no obvious path towards a great awakening at the end. The characters are likable and believable and the acting simply brilliant by all. It's a about a complex guy who doesn't really know who he is or how to cope, and a bunch of stuff happening. Hugely enjoyable and at times extremely funny.
