Strange Beginnings
Greetings review

'Greetings' is a strange beginning for both Brian DaPalma and Robert De Niro, being a fairly self-conscious 'kooky' movie about dodging the draft to Vietnam. There's none of the action and slick-cool of DaPalma's later, greater: though, there's plenty of playful editing and characterization: the De Niro here is the De Niro we see now, the one who stars in comedy and horror flicks (his excuse then was inexperience, not fat lazy greed). Mind, you can see a lot of what became the Taxi Driver and the Deer Hunter in De Niro's emergent playing.
Otherwise, it's no classic, fun in its time, but now a fish out of water. Of real interest to fans of the director, actors and genre - I recommend film students always watch films from early in careers, it can be reassuring if not informative.
