(39)Wonderful low-key film made long before 'indie' became too cool for school.
By Cthulhuboy (30 reviews) from Sheffield , 14 Jun 2012With a script filled to the brim with subtle and intelligent humour (and some not so subtle schoolboy humour), engaging and interesting characters brilliantly portrayed by the young cast, as well as the odd surreal moment, it is an enjoyable and easygoing 90 minutes and is eminenently watchable by anyone who has ever been a teenager.
Whilst being of its time, its also timeless, as it has very few cultural references, beyond the dated fashions and pre-PC banter, which is not particularly offensive unless you are a complete and utter dullard or a prissy prude.
I admit that this film has a special place for me as I was a gangly teen at high school in the early '80s, but there's no denying that this is a quality low budget film with real magic in its script, execution and performances. It certainly is not just an extended (if slightly risque) episode of Grange Hill as some people have stated - for starters it's about 99% less depressing and 1000% funnier. And it has Clare Grogan in it.
It would be so easy to knock this today as a slight and whimsical nostalgia piece where nothing much really happens, if it wasn't so very, very charming and very, very funny. On my recent viewing, the first in about 15 years, I laughed constantly all the way through, and I can't say that any other comedy has done that for me for a long, long time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not funny and not clever
By Alexa00 (1 review) , 24 May 2011It was only halfway through this film that I remembered it was supposed to be a comedy...I think I laughed once!?
And it contained some of the worst music I have ever heard in a film. 'Soft jazz' interludes? What a waste of an opportunity to create a brilliant, memorable soundtrack.
I agree with other reviewers that it felt like an episode of Grange Hill. Not a feature-length version though, just a reeeaallly loooong episode - the first hour could have been condensed into about 20 minutes without losing anything.
The pace started to pick up after the first hour and there were a couple of charming moments, but then it ended. Oh well.- Was this review helpful to you?

Nice, easy going vintage movie
By JustKewl (105 reviews) from Ipswich , 16 Jan 2010This is movie really isn't anything legendary. However, it's nice and easy going and doesn't ask too much of the viewer in terms of interpretation massive concentration to detail. It's kind of hard to work out what the film is about in relation to the title. You're led to thing it's one thing, when the girl referred to a Gregory's girl is not who you assumed it is. I'd describe this film as one of the early teen films, long before the genre became popular in America as it is now.- Was this review helpful to you?

Teenage Ulysses
By Tes (7 reviews) from Halifax , 27 Jun 2009Charming little gem of a movie. Teenage, lust-driven Gregory sets out to woo his new-found love but the girls are much more aware than the boys. The film follows everyman Gregory on his quest. Full of warmth and humour, sometimes surreal. This film deserves to be better known.- Was this review helpful to you?
