Gentle existential wanderings through the snow

Werner's in-joke, repeated in spirit throughout, is that the documentary is set in Antarctica but isn't about penguins. Just like your granddad he doesn't tire of such a witticism and every observation bathes in its benign glow. Simply offering up a microphone gathers a rich harvest of personalities and situations, drawn to him like snow on his boots and the comedy unfolds. His devotion to his craft seems total and his fascination with people, tireless. No doubt the editing of huge amounts of footage, has inevitably moulded this film into a peculiar visionary experience. His reverence for the marine cathedrals beneath the ice and a boyish excitement before the volcano points out a fanciful spirituality but its a pathway strewn with the incongruous human drifters, buffoons and hermits there, who seem to have lost their way. By a customer , 14 Apr 2013Chilling, compelling and haunting documentary / autobiography / detective story. My wife, 11 year old son and I were all gripped by this powerful film that subtly reveals the tragic story behind the death of a man and his partner who befriended grizzlies in the wilds of Canada using edited original video footage shot by the grizzly man himself. Excellent Hot AirFilm

Some of the filming, particularly the wild life footage, is spectacular. Werner Herzog uses a very hands on approach, which eminently suits the documentary.- Was this review helpful to you?

Darkness and Light
By a customer , 14 Mar 2013Grizzly Man gets 4 stars, Herzog has an uncanny knack of capturing the real person, the more unusual the better. It is funny and desperately dark and sad at the same time, that is it's genius rather than it's downfall. Some of the moments caught on camera with the wildlife surrounding Treadwell are absolutely stunning. I've made many people watch this since seeing it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Anartic life
