Funny, sweet, unexpectedly profound!

This is a great film to watch with friends so you can discuss the questions it raises over a beer afterwards ... Groundhog day is a gentle romantic comedy but deals with unexpectedly big issues such as confronting eternity, finding meaning in daily drudgery and how to take control of your own destiny.

Bill Murray finds himself in a wierd timewarp situation (using a device that is surprisingly convincing), that means he relives one day over and over again. The scope of his activities throughout the day is quite astonishing and very imaginative. It makes you think of the infinite aspects that make up a single experience and particularly draws attention to the many different stories imminent within a single situation.

I felt Bill Murray's situation is analagous to a general modern feeling that you are stuck in the same place, day after day, with no hope of escape. The movie explores how to identify and achieve meaning and progression from a dead-end situation.

I found the acting ocassionally rather suspect, but that did not detract from my overall enjoyment of a delightful and unexpectedly thought-provoking story.

Exquisitely funny and thoughtful

I was delighted to find this film has not aged at all and is just as funny as when I saw it in the cinema all those years ago. Bill Murray is note perfect in the lead role and the tone of the film is just exquisite throughout. We watched it with our twelve year old daughter; she enjoyed it immensely as well and the film was entirely appropriate for her in all respects. Without doubt Groundhog Day has proved over time that it truly deserves the accolade of being described as a classic. Very funny, and immensely enjoyable.

Funny existentialism

What would you do if nothing you did made any difference to anyone, and you woke up in the same bed at 6am of the same day regardless? Phil Connors (Bill Murray) passes though fear, horror, rage, resignation, despair, engagement, and eventually, acceptance, stages reminiscent of Kubler-Ross’s stages of grief. He gets drunk, laid, suicidal, falls in love, becomes a pianist, doctor, lifesaver and, basically, Christ. How often does he repeat the day? I quickly lost count, but it could be thousands, or even tens of thousands of times. While at heart an existential examination of the meaning(less) of life, this is no black and white maundering meditation (yes, I’m talking about you, Tarkovsky), but very funny, caustic and ultimately uplifting. Murray does despair better than beneficence, but gives the performance of his life. And the film wittily poses a question that we all struggle with – what should I do, and why does it matter? I’m not sure I was convinced by the answer and I did wonder what would happen next: how could Murray possibly live again in a world in where his actions had at least some consequences?

thoughtful comic romantic fantasy

A delightful rom com with a twist! It fully engaged me even though the core idea was so simple. Murray's transformation from a tired old self-centred cynic to someone who becomes creative, caring and loving is totally believable. The film very powerfully expresses the idea that each and every one of our choices have profound consequences so lets make the very best choices we can.

Taken me twenty years to get round to seeing this movie. Can't believe I have now seen it, totally recommend this movie is up there with the Truman show. Classic.

Classic Bill Murrey Genius

Classic Bill Murray, at his best. Sarcastic, witty and unique. Highly recommend it for those of you that like subtle humour in a gentle storyline. Enjoy!
