Although it didn't get much hoop-la in the press when released, this film centres on the story of a (fictitious) director who had been abroad & returns to LA only to find the beginnings of the blacklisting & House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigations in full swing. It primarily deals with the human aspect: friends turning in friends (or even family members), the job loss created as a result of being purportedly identified as a communist, etc. It was a poignant film. It is clear from those who made up the cast of the film that no one should be persecuted based upon their political beliefs (even if it doesn't agree with the mainstream) and freedom of expression is what the idea of a true free society means. You can't have a true democracy or 'free' society & then persecute those who don't agree with the powers that be. Very relevant even now.
