Based on the Broadway show from the Damon Runyon short story and filled to the brim with Frank Loesser tunes such as "Luck Be a Lady" and "Sit Down, You're Rocking the Boat," this outrageously comic film featuring Marlon Brando's bold musical debut is a colorful tale about gamblers, a feisty Salvation Army lass, and a dance-hall girl with a pining heart. Veteran gambler Sky Masterson (Brando) takes a bet from Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) that he can win the affection of a "soldier" (Jean Simmons) in the Salvation Army, setting himself up to lose both his money and his heart. Romance is the last thing the gambler and the missionary expect, and they fight against their attraction for all they're worth in glowing singing and dancing numbers. Love proves to be contagious as spicy dancer Miss Adelaide, in a role re-created for the screen from Broadway by showstopper Vivian Blaine, is determined to get her fiance, Nathan, to the altar one way or another. Stubby Kaye and B.S. Pully also reprise their stage roles in this glorious Cinemascope film that earned four Academy Award nominations. GUYS AND DOLLS consistently ranks among the most popular film musicals of all time.

When producer Sam Goldwyn set about filming this great Broadway musical, he went after the best dancer he could find, his ideal Sky Masterson, Gene Kelly. Louis B Mayer wouldn't release Kelly to his rival, however, so Goldwyn went for the best actor in the movies. That's how Marlon Brando became the definitive Masterson, singing the Frank Loesser songs himself, cleverly choreographed by Michael Kidd, whose depiction of Broadway is one of the film's highlights. With Jean Simmons waking up to love with If I Were a Bell, and Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine as Nathan Detroit and his ever-lovin' Adelaide, what more could you want?
The artifices of Runyonland are made more so by a defiantly studio-bound production and thoroughly flat handling; but the songs and sometimes the performances survive.
I highly rate this musical . It was a joy to watch. The opening scene with dancing is a little long but then be prepared for a treat. All the favourites dear old Stubby Kaye as Nicely Nicely made us laugh.Even Brando was credible with his singing . As far as I am concerned anything with Sinatra is pleasurable and this is no exception. We were very impressed by the transfer to DVD. The colour is excellent without the saturation that tends to plague some musicals. There are lots of laughs in it with mannerisms etc of the supporting cast . Please watch it more than once. It's a great film for a wet afternoon with a big packet of popcorn and your arm round the girl you love.
