    [Highly rated reviewer]

Contrived but emotionally-affective melodrama about euthanasia - along the lines of Mercy or Murder?, Million Dollar Baby and the original (of which this is a remake): The Sea Inside - that rehearses the arguments for and against; while being both in favor of voluntary Mercy Killing and against it; depending upon individual circumstances.

A far more entertaining remake than the original; retaining its Spanish ambience with a soulful injection of Indian sensibility combined with a playful nod in the direction of The Prestige.

This is also a tale of the unrequited and unexpressed sexual love of a beautiful woman who sacrifices her marriage to nurse a dying quadriplegic.

The film's only real problem is that the lead is not as convincing as Javier Bardem was in the first film, but this is more than made-up for by the presence of one of the world's great beauties, Aishwarya RAI BACHCHAN an impressive talent, to boot, in a (Bollywood) happy to see women as more than just sex-objects - unlike Hollywood. But, overall, the subtle characterization is matched by the equally-excellent acting.

We loved this movie - the concept although looks like a remake is very well adapted to Bollywood. The director has done a good job.Rithik has done what he can do,may be an actor who could have been more solid would have been better. However we are not sure if anyone else could actually bring that charisma required into this role. He has done the good bits to Ethan with flair for sure.Aish - loved her role, what a goddess with her looks.she has done justice to the role with all her limitations as an actress. So i would say a must watch movie, well made, good emotionally moving storyline. Go watch it...it gets our vote for sure.

The man Ethan is paralysed due to a jealous rival trying to murder him. Despite this that man is not in jail, and Ethan is happy to teach his son all his magic. Why when that means the wicked man will get what he wants? You only latterly find that his nurse who seems to care for him a lot, is married to a jealous brute - how come he turns up in the film so late suddenly bothered about his wife who he obviously knew for a long time that she is a carer and nurse? The 'marriage' too is false - everybody claps etc but it is not a real marriage and you never get to see Ethan die, leaving the end flat and incomplete. Loved seeing Hrithiks magical dancing, but that was about it. Could have been done so much better.

This is pro-euthanasia propaganda and pro-divorce as well.

There's much too much of this around now. Beware of its influence. It is very dangerous. I have known someone killed under the influence of this movement, and I couldn't stop them.

  • It should have been so much more ...

Atmospherically shot in soft smoky colours with Hrithik Roshan convincing as quadriplegic Ethan and Hrithik/Ash recreating their (justifiably) famous chemistry, this should be both a stunning and an important film. And yet I came away feeling dissatisfied.

Mostly, it is all just too slow. There are moments when I thought the director was going to say something really hard-hitting about the weight of expectation put on Ethan, the reasons for his desperation to end his life or the issues of euthanasia but then the film drifts off into more lingering shots of Goa. Until finally, the central story of an individual's right to die is ducked for sentiment and the frankly silly backstory to Ethan's accident.

That smoky blue/grey palette shot through with deep reds is lovely and the sequence of Hrithik dancing with the bubble/ball is exquisite but even the considerable acting skills and charisma of Hrithik and Ash can't overcome the weak script and lack of tight editing. In the end, I feel the film goes for style over substance, with no satisfying bite.

Beautiful Film. Dont care what it did on box office, the story, acting, production, direction, everything was great. Ash and Hrithik have done justice to the roles and looked fantastic. It was really a superb film.
