An undercover FBI agent, Sascha Petrosevitch (Steven Seagal), takes bullets for his buddy, Nick Frazier (Ja Rule). Nick figures Sascha for dead until the two are reunited again on duty at New Alcatraz (a hellish, high-tech version of the now-defunct prison). At New Alcatraz, criminal mastermind Lester (Bruce Weitz) is set to be executed. Lester knows the whereabouts of a fortune in gold, but isn't talking. With only hours to live, Lester takes a meeting with Sascha, just as corrupt prison official Donny (Morris Chestnut) and his gang raid New Alcatraz by helicopter and take Lester and a Supreme Court justice hostage. Highly energetic action scenes pay respect to the films of John Woo, and director Don Michael Paul makes many tasteful choices in the film's editing and music.

Sporting a few extra pounds and at least one extra chin, Steven Seagal fails to convince here as an undercover FBI agent sent to the New Alcatraz. Once in the hi-tech prison, Seagal finds himself at the centre of a hostage situation when a group called the 49ers — presumably not the American football team — break in so they can interrogate a death-row inmate regarding the whereabouts of $200 million in gold. Seagal copes with this by leaping through the air, shooting as he goes and grunting derisively whenever conversation with his sidekick (rapper Ja Rule) is required. Writer/director Don Michael Paul brings no credible suspense to the film, simply overloading it with action to compensate for the lack of style or coherence. Made with tongue firmly in cheek, this might have worked — but Seagal takes himself far too seriously. Disastrously, he expects us too as well.

This one should have been called 'Under Seige 3'. Stealing heavily from every other Seagal and Van Damme flick, SS plays an undercover cop, currently pretending to be a prisoner in a revamped Alcatraz. When terrorists break into the gaol to gain info on an inmate's hidden gold bullion, SS is forced to become a one man army and we are forced to watch him try to act.
OK, maybe I am being too harsh. I enjoyed Half Past Dead. The formula may be worn (rapper co-star, evil female 2nd in command, Seagal kicking butt), but the execution of this one is spot on. Switch off your brain and enjoy!
In 'Half Past Dead,' star and producer Steven Seagal tries to revive a career stuck in neutral by returning to the trapped-in-a-box formula of his best film, 1992's 'Under Siege.' Instead of a ship, the box is a federal prison where Seagal must single-handedly -- well, almost single-handedly, as he gets help from several surprisingly cooperative inmates -- battle vicious commandos who take over the prison to force a death row inmate to reveal the whereabouts of $200 million in stolen gold. But It comes no where near Steven Seagal's other films - Hard to Kill - Marked for Death - Out for Justice - The Patriot to name a few. For the people who wants big gun battles Half Past dead has plenty of gun fights! Some fighting by Seagal.Decent film if you want a non stop action but with a PG-13 rating Steven Seagal didn't do his trademark arts. His fighting was awesome but don't expect to see him totally destroy anyone.
