This is the worst of the series so far. Director Joe Chappelle rigidly sticks to the “X number of grisly murders committed by a man in a mask” formula, lamely spicing things up with a supernatural cult element. Trying to give menace by proxy to the laughable awfulness, Chappelle revives Carpenter's original Halloween score as a backdrop. It doesn't work, and neither do the useless revelations intended to explain Michael Myers's years of murder, mystery and mayhem. Donald Pleasence gives his usual reliable performance, but sadly the line of dialogue, “Not dead. Just very much retired”, proved to be his epitaph: the infirm actor died shortly after shooting, and the film is dedicated to his memory.

    • Radio Times
  • Tired and, at times, incomprehensible sequel that adds black magic rituals to the familiar mix but without making it any more interesting.

Not as bad as I'd heard...

... but not the best in the series either, certainly better than halloween 3. Definately worth seeing if you've seen all the others.

It's a halloween film, you get what you expect!
