Nishi is cop with tragic life. His daughter died as young child, his wife is terminally ill and to ease her pain he has to borrow money from gangsters. His life long acquaintance and partner gets shot and crippled and his fellow cops get killed or injured while working with him. As he becomes increasingly ruthless due to death drawing closer and closer he has to negotiate remains of life with combination of cleverness and brutality. He does it meticulously and successfully. The movie made in 1997 has distinctive 1970s type of soundtrack and has numerous flashback scenes which gives it somewhat surreal dimension. English title is 'Fireworks'.
