Good gritty Western fair
By FlyingSquirrel (30 reviews) from London , 18 Jun 2004[Highly rated reviewer]
S slightly darker take on what life was like on the frontier in with Eastwood discovering justice as a solace for the wrongs done to him in the past. Unfortunately Eastwood's style of acting isn't suited to this realisation of change in his character (still too much of the eyes Clint) and so he doesn't quite bring it off.
My vote for best performance in this film goes to Inger Stevens who manages to convey the innately macabre nature of her existence, which on the surface seems so romantic and delicate, with her daily trips to view the condemned men and the final admission of the well of hatred inside her. Even the daily hangings, such a grotesque spectacle for the rest of the territory, hold no interest for her until she follows Eastwood on his journey of change.
Overall an impressive film trying to get away from the Spaghetti Western style to really show how cheap life was in those days.- Was this review helpful to you?

Must try harder
By a customer from Lytham St. Annes , 26 Feb 2008I thought there were some interesting themes that really could have been developed but sadly none were as the film dealt briefly and inffectively with too broad a remit.- Was this review helpful to you?
