Children should enjoy this sentimental Hollywood fabrication of the life of the great storyteller, and sophisticated adults will appreciate the superb Frank Loesser songs, notably the charming Inchworm, the unforgettable Ugly Duckling, and the rollicking Wonderful Copenhagen. They're all performed by star Danny Kaye, unusually subdued in possibly his best screen performance, a role that became identified with him. A big hit in its day, it's worthwhile recalling the anti-Semitism that erupted in Scandinavia back in the 1950s over the Jewish Kaye playing Denmark's treasured raconteur. Nevertheless, the movie helped put Copenhagen and the Little Mermaid well and truly on the world's tourist map.
Artificial, sugary confection with little humour and far too little magic of any kind; the star carries it nicely, but he is on his own apart from the songs.
Its smulchy and old fashioned and doesn't contain any super special effects, but it's still got to be one of my favourite films. Even my teenage kids were happy to put down their PCs, PS2s and (in the case of my daughter) boyfriend, to watch this classic. Basic story, good hearted cobbler moves to the big city and falls in love. On the way both he and his assistant have adventures and sing songs. His vivid imagination and ability for story telling (The Ugly Duckling and Little Mermaid included) enables them to get out of any situation they find themselves in and ultimately leads to his return back to his little village a triumphant literary hero, where previously he was considered and expensive nuisance. They don't make them like this anymore. Great, easy watching for a wet Sunday or big family get together such as Xmas.
Loved this as a child and still love it today. Great viewing.
