    [Highly rated reviewer]

'Happiness' is quite simply one of the most upsetting, challenging and hilarious films you will ever see. Not for those who are easily offended but then they are the kind of people who should really be watching this kind of groundbreaking cinema.

Solondz veers between unbearably uncomfortable situations to the broadest slapstick and back again so the viewer is never sure of their footing. The scene between father and son towards the end is one of the greatest I've ever seen

Please do yourself a favour and rent this- your life will never be the same again!

  • Crude and unoriginal

Crude and unoriginal - though I did not make it past 30 mins into the film, so it may have improved in the latter stages.

Not recommended for anyone over the age of 27

You may not think that seeing life, looking at life, witnessing life, is enough for a film. If you expect to be entertained in a conventional way by thrills and story lines, whatever that amounts to, then this film may not be for you. This does have a story arc, which is beautifully written and it is also, edge of the seat stuff, if you count white knuckle cringing that way but its exceptional, not conventional.

I wouldn't call it a comedy because one of its central issues is child abuse and laughing is the last thing you'll want to do, but elsewhere its as funny as observed life can be, and its always subtle, tender and perceptive.

Its characters are superbly drawn and acted. Its verbal plain speaking can be shocking, but balanced by its truthfulness it delivers its condemnation without hyperbole.

This could have been a wallowing in unhappiness but instead was a revelation.

But not for prudes. Nothing more to say really. If you can handle paedophilia, cum shots and obscene phone calls then watch it. If not then look elsewhere,
