Harry Sawyer (Northam) and Wayne Wayne Wayne Jr. (Zahn) are two escaped convicts who find themselves in Happy, Texas. When they are mistaken for a gay couple who are in town to host a local beauty pageant, they use the opportunity to slip into character and avoid the authorities. Obviously, the bumbling, heterosexual criminals don't have a clue as to what they're doing, and when romance appears in the form of a distraught banker (Walker) and a tacky teacher (Douglas), their real personas threaten to emerge and blow their cover. Zahn's hysterical performance won him a Special Jury Award at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.

This sparkling comedy of errors gives Jeremy Northam (An Ideal Husband, The Winslow Boy) the chance to unfreeze that stiff upper lip of his. Northam stars as a convict who escapes from an overturned prison van with fellow prisoner Steve Zahn. They end up in the Texas town of Happy where they are mistaken for two homosexual carnival organisers who've been hired to help with a beauty contest for five year olds. The local (male) sheriff takes a shine to Sawyer, while Wayne falls for schoolteacher Illeana Douglas (That whole gay thing is more of a hobby, really). A small comic gem from director/co-writer Mark Illsley that shows great affection for people and their quirky ways.
"...HAPPY, TEXAS is a hoot, a hilarious comedy that's smart and caring....It sparkles with deliciously spot-on, career-advancing performances..."
this is a truly unusual film in that the odd, slightly formulaic plot is completely overshadowed by incredibly good and genuine performances. William H Macy is unparalleled as the small town Texan sheriff, and Jeremy Northam works equally well-- and doesn't make me squrm with his American accent. It's an odd choice, but the acting really does give it the edge.
I liked this film, it was funny without any major laugh out loud moments. Story of 2 convicts who are not all bad. Worth a watch!
