Why did I like this film so much? The meandering story, the switching from black and white to colour and a claustrophobic setting remained compelling because of the two great actors in the main roles. Perhaps I was won over because I love latin america and asia and this film brought the two together. Lke much of the directors work you are watching a small intimate story slowly unfold and you will either be captivated or bored in the first 10 minutes. I watched it twice.

  • Two different versions on the one DVD!

To suggest the title is ironic would be an understatement. Nonetheless there is a certain compulsion to watch this movie through to the end where it does get a bit happier. BUT, just to confuse matters, we watched the 'Making of...' documentary that was also on the DVD and it's refers to an almost entirely different storyline! Very few of the shots that appeared in 'Making of...' actually appeared in the movie - I even watched the whole movie again to check that the DVD hadn't 'jumped' forward without us noticing. It hadn't. In the 'Making of...' there's a central female character: not in the movie we watched! Apparently one of the characters makes a suicide attempt: not in the movie we watched! Thankfully I watched both the movie and 'the making of...' with my partner so I did have reassurance that it wasn't my imagination! Very odd!

It could have been good if the director hadn't cut every bits of it untill there was nothing left. Not even a story.

  • Essential viewing

This film is essential viewing if you wish to broaden your view of what films can offer. Sad, tragic, comic, black & white then colour this film has it all, plus two tour de force performnces by the lead actors. I don wonder how many takes some of the scenes must have had to get the correct feel the finished version showed. A film that should not be missed.

    Don't believe the label!

This film is not funny, sexy or beautiful. It is also not a 'Spanish language' film - (although it is set in Argentina, it could have been anywhere). I had not heard of the Director but I will ensure I avoid his films in future. Films have the potential to be entertaining, moving, funny,thought-provoking,life-enhancing etc. etc. This film is simply boring, depressing and grim. Steer well clear!
