Hard Rain

Rising flood waters imperil the residents of a Midwestern town, but to a gang of thieves, the disaster is an opportunity--to waltz off with the contents of a bank vault abandoned by the evacuated townspeople. Something they didn't count on is armed truck driver Christian Slater, called upon to carry the money out of the vault and to higher ground. Thus begins a battle of wills set against the raging flood tides, complicated further by a corrupt sheriff's designs on the loot. Nifty flood effects and high-octane action sequences keep things moving at a rapid pace.

Christian Slater and Minnie Driver battle the elements in this slim, waterlogged but fast-paced adventure that throws the bad guys together with the forces of nature after a massive flood envelops a small town on the same night that a daring robbery takes place. Utterly preposterous in places (why can movie characters hold their breath underwater for about 20 minutes and we mere humans can't?), this nonetheless zips along merrily and offers the bonus of some impressively tongue-in-cheek performances from Morgan Freeman and Randy Quaid.

    Didn’t float my boat

If you are looking for a movie that has some action and is moderately entertaining without requiring much cerebral activity, this is right up your street. For the rest of us watch Identity.

'Hard Rain' does have an excellent cast and some impressive set designs and effects. But it is so horribly written and cliché ridden it's distressing to see such a cast and budget wasted! The plot is very weak and the twists and turns are no more than a slight veering that you can spot a mile off. One of the final scenes where the state police turn up seconds after all the action pretty much sums it up. Definitely missed the boat, this one.

I don't get it. If this movie didn't have Morgan Freeman and Christian Slater in it, it would have looked like a very bad TV movie. The dialogue was appalling (almost as if it was actually taken word for word from a novel with no attempt to screen write it. I wouldn't know if this were true or not, just what it 'seemed' like.) There's obviously a lot of very hard work going on in this film, which is a big shame because it's all to no avail. Only reason I gave as many as two stars is because Slater and Freeman are not bad 'all' the way through.

    Thurman looking forward to Motherhood

    • 17 Apr 2008

Pulp Fiction star Uma Thurman is to take the lead in upcoming indie comedy Motherhood, according to industry whispers. Showbiz bible Variety says Thurman, who also appeared in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill double-header, will be joined by Grosse Pointe Blank star Minnie Driver and ER veteran Anthony Edwards in the film, which starts shooting in May. The movie follows a day in the life of Thurman's character, a stressed-out mother-of-two trying to hold it together while organising her daughter's Read more
