Not as bad as I thought it was going to be

To be honest with you, I rented this movie because I thought it was another movie of the same name. However I was pleasantly surprised to find this was a quite acceptable thriller. It had a little bit of everything you expect from the genre, action, suspense... but I found myself wishing for just a little more romance and relationship development/history for the main characters, which would have added the richness this story needed to take it up a gear. Despite this, the movie was saved by two elements which I enjoyed; one being the interaction between the two detectives, both nearing retirement age, and having such different approaches to police work and life; and the other being the palpable sexual tension between the prosecuting and defence lawyers, ably played by Mia Sara and John D'Aquino. These two made an average movie just a little bit more charming with their presence. I've liked Sara since seeing 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' as a teenager, and D'Aquino always seems to upstage the bigger names he stars alongside. In fact he delivers one of the best lines in this film; 'She's a witch and you can substitute a B there.' I did feel that their two characters could have been used more, to provide a contrast with the strictly 'cop-buddy-movie' feel of the piece. A not entirely unexpected, but intriguing twist to the end made this worth watching and a happy accident to discover, even though I'm not Reynolds fan.
