A Night of Reminiscence
By Trevor from Cardiff , 31 May 2007[Highly rated reviewer]
Hardcore Homecoming was the U.S. independent wrestling scene's response to WWE resurrecting ECW for the first time in 2005. Held at the infamous Viking Hall (also known as the ECW arena), the show featured stars either out of favour with the McMahon family or too proud/stubborn to appear on what many perceived to be a half-baked imitation being held purely to turn a buck.
The show lacked the glitz of its WWE counterpart - if anything the production values were worse than the original ECW's before they strayed into PPV territory - and some of that carries over to this disc. The in-ring mic work is often unintelligible and crowd noise is hard to make out at times (and badly edited out at others), the music reeks of the cheesy europop that plagued the final ECW releases and the camera work is often shaky... but overall its no worse than most independent DVD's around today. There are a lot of heartfelt backstage promos and comments which are much better, but it leaves the show a little disjointed at times.
The matches are mostly good, but there is an amount of melancholy to be felt watching people so desperate to hold onto the past. Its a sad fact that many of the folk on the show never had it as good as they did in ECW, and that time has not been kind to them since its demise. The show was intended to be a celebration of past glory and it succeeds in some ways, but the pleasure is often a little guilty.
Overall its worth watching (hence the rating), and to be honest most fans of the stars or genre will want to see it regardless of any review, but those looking for a fix of late 90's ECW action might be left feeling a little sad by how it all turned out. My recommendation is to watch the show and enjoy it for what it is, then go buy some ROH and remember that although it failed, ECW's legacy and commitment to quality independent wrestling lives on elsewhere.
The Card:
Simon Diamond & CW Anderson v Chris Chetti & Mikey Whipwreck
Blue Meanie v Tracy Smothers
Kid Kash v 2 Cold Scorpio
Ian & Axl Rotten v Kronus & New Jack
Jerry Lynn v Justin Credible
Sandman v Raven

By a customer from Leicester England , 17 Apr 2009Extremly brutal. True ECW wrestling not what we got now. The main event was a triple treat barbed wired ring rope match. The stars include the likes Mick Foley,Sandman, terry funk and Sabu. Tos show how butal it is a man got sciccors and stabbed the guy for real. Yes you heard me right this is real wrestling not fake.- Was this review helpful to you?
