This is where the Harry Potter story really begins to take off. This movie is a little more horrific than the first story with some frightening visuals. Think giant spiders and snakes. The story is tight, and well told, limiting us to the world and knowledge of Harry Potter, the way it should be. Music and sound are great. Cinematography is beautiful and smooth. The acting is better that what I would expect from a film centralized around a large amount of teens and pre teens. If you saw the first, see the second. If you haven't seen the first, see them both.

I sometimes wish the familiarities didn't have to be repeated each time....but thats missing the point, I know.

Like a TV season the initiation matters, a love of that world and its engagement is its own end. Subtlety can be overrated and joining the experience with its fecund ideas can be a secret treat, its good to share.

I hadn't paid enough attention picking through the red herrings and wannabe twists to have a take on the plot but conveniently this din't seem to matter. Branagh is nothing short of brilliant, his bravura Gilderoy Lockhart outshines expectations superbly, igniting things just at the right moment with clarity. Jason Isaacs too, is just so, the toff you love to hate and the familiar roll call of our grandest actors, all come into their own, as we expect. Even Gollum seems to have apparated straight from a shift on Mr Tolkein's opus, adding another welcome lightness. Boy do those house elves work hard. The monster effects take on a new, slinky feel but its still Rowling's magic, cherished location shooting and rich charactures. Quirky, British and fantastical.

It could have been a bit shorter. 2 and 40 minutes is way too long for such a story! Hope the next one will be a bit less foreseeable in the storyline.

  • Darker than the first

Second part of the Harry Potter films with Harry returning to Hogwarts despite warnings not to and uncovering some dark, dodgy goings-on.

Again really well made like the first film with more CGI than before and the great addition of Kenneth Branagh, Mark Williams and Jason Isaacs.

Does borrow a lot this time with a lot of Lord of the Rings similarities as well as the odd Star Wars likeness, the Quidditch chase being basically the Speeder Bike bit in Return of the Jedi.

Bit darker too this time with more weird shenanigans in the hidden corners of Hogwarts and Daniel Radcliffe getting better as an actor although Rupert Grint is starting to grate a bit.

More brilliant music from John Williams helps the film along too.

Like the book it has too many similarities to the first but it still a great family film. The only other downside is Daniel Radcliffe's acting but apart from that it is still fun to watch.
