    [Highly rated reviewer]

'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' is the ocular introduction to a world that so countless individuals have previously fallen in love with in print.

The acting provides sincerity to the movie, Alan Rickman, Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith and Richard Harris all perform magnificently, and the younger actors are astonishingly first-class.

The weakest characteristic of the film is its pacing and flow. Several of the sequences feel lack coherence, principally in the first half of the film. They play as a best-of-the-book mishmash rather than a focused story. This results in some sluggish elements in an already extensive movie.

Essential character information that allowed readers of the book to deduce who the baddie was before it was exposed, has been misplaced. Not only does that exclusion remove some of the fun of the story, but it presents sizeable plot holes in the centre of the movie. Obviously a ‘must see’ for all Potter fans, but not so much for the film perfectionist

The opening scene of the saga is conjured beautifully by Harris, Coltrane and Smith and as worlds colliding goes, its as seductive as any Narnia or Neverland. With Griffiths and John Hurt, followed by Rickman, then Leslie Phillips as the sorting hat, Julie Walters and even John Cleese's Sir Nick, the scenes sparkle effortlessly. Witty imaginings match the talent of the roll call and it feels assured but its nothing if not a children's tale and though they're amusing, it's up to the progression of perils to take up the running, some scenes hardly flying off the page, before it feels like bedtime.

When it works, it's menagerie and sense of adventure inspire, often down to Hagrid, a latter day Mary Poppins, complete with umbrella and flying Triumph Bonneville. Nearly the sum of its parts but you'd have a heart of stone not to be enchanted.

Fantastic start to the series of Harry Potter films. If they are all of the same high quality then it will be a treat. Although I haven't read any of the books, I feel that I have started the journey with Harry and his pals.

Wow I love this movie especially that part when neville falls off of his broom. Anyone who has been waiting ages, like I have, is in for a treat. We finally got our hands on the film and were speechless. Even my eldest daughter loved it

    Hope you enjoyed it

  • slightly above average story

I like the set, the story line, the costumes and all that but I did find that this movie is a bit too long. It could have been cut by at least 30 minutes. On the whole, all that I can give to this movie is an average of good because of its length.
